All heron armoury swords are made to order , and the type of blade will depend on the type of use that is required.
Most of the blades i make for this period range from 26-32inches long and the width of the blade at the cross guard from 45mm-52mm.
Western style combat swords.
Most western style light weight faster type swords i make are 45mm wide at the cross which is the minimum allowed by some groups.
The point width is also important for this type of sword as the wider the point diameter the more tip heavy the blade will be.
There are two main types of blade for this period .
Picture 1
The blade edge tapers evenly and straight to the point the typical point width in this case is from 25-30mm.
Picture 2
The blade edge starts to curve roughly 2/3rds to 3/4 of the way towards the point , this results in less weight towards the point and therefore creates a faster blade.. typical point diameter in this case is 20-22mm
if the sword is to be a copy of an original then i would usually copy the original blade shape in any case.
next consideration is the edge thickness , which is from 2-3mm for combat weapons of this period.
The thicker the edge the heavier the sword so in western style combat where the edge to edge contact is not so hard ( usually) 2-2.5mm is adequate so most of the swords i make of this type will have a 2.5mm thick edge that will become 2mm as it runs down the blade towards the point.
Generally though i will make a blade that is 3mm-2.5mm which covers most base's except where a sword is required to be used in heavier edge to edge combat in which case a 3mm edge and straight taper is recommended.
Picture 3
this sword is a similar type and length as picture 2 but is for heavier use and therefore it has a3mm thick edge with a straight taper ..both are made from the same thickness steel but the weight difference in this case is 230 grams.
for heavier types of edge to edge combat then a thicker blade would be more suitable so be sure to mention this when making any inquiries..
This is just a guide to the most common types i make but Any blade length/thickness and width within reason can be considered and priced upon request
